studio friday (sparkle, shine or shimmer)

Mood : For lucky best wash, use Mr. Sparkle!  Listening to: M.I.A.

All over my studio when I am working on pendants or assemblages are these optical lenses. I have collected boxes and boxes of them. My very favorite coming from England one of the first female optometrists there. It came with two wonderful cases full of fantastic old books with gorgeous plates of eye diseases. Who knew something like that could be so stunning!?! It was in pristine condition and just is a treasure.
Some I just collect others get turned into mini collage pendants.
I cover the back with decorative papers in old english floral patterns and then seal them with a durable archival glass-like resin. (The bottom three are turned over so you can see the backs.) So both the front and back are so sparkly and shimmer so much it is a wonder I don't wear sunglasses in my studio. Cool
A bit different then I do them but a great tutorial if you want to try one. And more shiny here.

I had no idea that such an animal existed. All of a sudden I want to go out and find old optical lenses to play with. Do you get most of yours off eBay? Your work is amazing, both quirky and beautiful. The magic formula.

Flippin’ sweet pendants you’ve fashioned there. That Edgar A. Poe is bitchin’. Is that image before or after they found his carcass in a ditch dying from “congestion of the brain”? Thanks for stopping by my blog by the way. I dig your collages. They’re crazy…and if I’m reading correctly, I like your politics. I like that you post your musical tastes…I’ll have to start that methinks. You’ve been listening to MIA and The Streets??? Sweet! If you start listening to Lady Sovereign we may have to run off to Vegas & get hitched then we can adopt third world babies together! We can name the first one Tsunami.

Hi Cindy. I use a polymer coating resin that I get a sculpture supply here – kind of like a epoxy resin. But something like Enviro-tex (Michaels or Hobby Lobby) would probably work. I am sure you know this. . . But I have to warn you though they are all HIGHLY – HIGHLY toxic – I wear a respirator and have my art room very well ventilated. But then I work with a lot of resin. But please make sure to take precautions if you do decide to use it!! I always worry so much I think too many people try to use it casually and it really does have some major dangers. Here is a link to a resin tutorial
P.S. Thank you again for all the sweet comments. Trevor – your hilarious. I do listen to Lady Sovereign – plan on seeing her and The Streets in Boulder this June. Should be a cheeky good time.
